What You Should Know About Boating on Point Judith Pond

You can’t miss Point Judith Pond while vacationing in South County, as it extends four miles from Block Island Sound to an area just south of downtown Wakefield. The estuary is where fresh water from the Saugatuckett River and saltwater from the Atlantic Ocean mix, creating a rich and diverse ecosystem that’s home to countless marine life species.

The scenery surrounding Point Judith Pond is also incredible, as you’ll come across developed areas and wilderness, depending on where you choose to explore. This pond is a must-visit for any South County vacationer, but you’ll need to prepare before heading on the water.

Here’s some information on boating on Point Judith Pond, including some spots you’ll want to visit during your travels.

Three Areas to Explore

There are three basic parts of Point Judith Pond: Galilee, Snug Harbor, and Wakefield.

Galilee is a busy fishing village with plenty of commercial sea traffic located at the southeast corner of the pond. There are a couple of small restaurants in the area and some scenic beaches, but it isn’t the best spot to take your boat because there are so many commercial vessels heading in and out of the harbor.

Snug Harbor sits on the west side of the pond, north of Galilee. This area features a few marinas offering transient dockage, making it the ideal location to store your boat during your vacation. Numerous charters leave from this harbor, as well.

The Wakefield area is perhaps the quietest of the bunch, despite its significant number of marinas. The water there is shallow and calm, making it a nice place to go for a paddle, or you can stop at one of the restaurants near Marine Park for lunch. Many visitors to South County will use Wakefield as a starting point because it’s easily accessible.

You’ll likely launch or store your boat at one of these three locations, so it’s worth learning about them. The starting point you choose depends on the location of your vacation rental and which part of the pond you’re looking to visit.

Where to Launch a Boat

You’ll have two public options for putting your boat in the water if you’ve brought it to South County. Your choice will ultimately depend on where you wish to explore and how much time you want to spend on the water.

Galilee has a public boat launch for visitors to use. The ramp is wide enough for two people to launch boats at once, and there’s an adjacent parking lot where you can leave your vehicle and trailer while you sail. Remember that the ramp gets extremely busy in the summer, so you’ll want to arrive early to secure parking.

The other option is in Wakefield, as there’s a ramp right beside Two Ten Oyster Bar & Grill and a parking area across the street. This launch also gets quite busy in the summer, and parking can fill up quickly because of its central location near the water.

Many private marinas have boat launches, too, which you’ll use if you’re taking advantage of transient dockage services. These ramps are typically less busy, getting you on the water faster.

Secret Locations to Explore

Boating on Point Judith Pond provides hours of enjoyment, and you’ll have plenty of fun paddling or motoring around, taking in the sights. There are a few hidden gem locations you won’t want to miss, though, especially if this is your first time going to the area.

First, heading east from the Galilee Boat Launch takes you to the northern end of the Galilee Bird Sanctuary. This marshland is best explored in a kayak, and you can continue north into Bluff Hill Cove while paddling alongside Goose Island.

Just north of Goose Island is Ram Island, which is heavily forested and a nice place to go for a hike. Just make sure to steer clear of the oyster farm on the island’s west side.

Gardiner Island and Beach Island are two of the best places to spend an afternoon in all of South County. These uninhabited islands in the middle of the pond, slightly northwest of Ram Island, feature beautiful beaches and fantastic scenery. You can only get there on a private watercraft, so they’re usually empty. If you want a private island experience, these are must-visit locations.

Launching your boat from Wakefield puts you close to Long Cove, which has Harbour Island on one side and the John H. Chafee National Wildlife Refuge on the other. Few places on Point Judith Pond are as quiet as this area, and there’s even a chance you’ll scope some wildlife on the shore from your boat.
