What to Expect at the South Kingstown Recreation Center

Staying in shape on your vacation can be challenging, especially if you’re used to keeping active and exercising multiple times per week. Fortunately, you’ll have some options in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, as the community makes it easy to locate some solo or group activities.

One of the town’s newest facilities is the South Kingstown Recreation Center, a multi-purpose facility featuring sports courts and organized activities. The venue is open to non-residents, although you’ll need to check the weekly calendar for availability.

If fitness is a priority in your life, South County has you covered. Here’s a look at everything going on at the South Kingstown Recreation Center.

Sports Facilities

The first thing you’ll notice at the South Kingstown Recreation Center is the multi-court gymnasium area. This section of the facility is reserved for sports and athletic programming, and you’ll have multiple options every week.

First, there’s open basketball almost every day of the week throughout the year. These sessions are for anyone over the age of 18, and all you have to do is show up and pay the $4 fee to use the facilities. You can’t organize full-court games during these sessions, as it’s primarily meant to shoot around or play a quick pick-up game with friends.

The center also has 18+, 30+, and women’s drop-in basketball at least once weekly at the cost of $6 per session. These sessions include organized games, so you can show up and join a team for the evening if you want to get those competitive juices flowing.

Another option is pickleball, as there are drop-in times multiple days per week. These times extend for a significant part of the day, so you can show up and play a few games before continuing your relaxing vacation. Keep in mind that pickleball is reserved for South County residents on some days, so check the schedule before arrival.

The pickleball courts have rotation rules in effect that you’ll have to follow on busy days. The gist is that you’ll put your paddle in line and wait for the current players to complete their game. Drop-in pickleball is $6 per player.

This facility hosts the occasional drop-in volleyball game, as well. You’ll typically find volleyball at least once per week, and it costs $6 to join a team.

Having access to this new facility in South Kingstown not only makes it easy to exercise but could also help you make friends while you’re in town. The result is a more fulfilling South County vacation.

The Fitness Center

You don’t have to be into sports to take advantage of the South County Recreation Center because there’s an on-site fitness center you can use. This center features weights and other equipment you’d expect to find at a local gym, and it’ll only cost you $4 to use it. Remember that this room is relatively small, so it probably won’t suffice if you’re used to a full-sized gym.

Exercise classes are scheduled for various times throughout the week, too. You can show up and pay the $6 drop-in fee to participate in a class to take your workout to the next level.

Walking Track

The sports courts at the South Kingstown Recreation Center have a walking track circling them, allowing locals and visitors to go for a stroll without having to head outside. This track is perfect if you aren’t comfortable walking at night or want to stay dry on a rainy day while still getting some exercise.

Use of the walking track costs $1 for non-residents and is open almost every day of the year for most of the facility’s operating hours. You can also run on the track if you’d like to get a little more activity during your South County vacation.

Keeping Active

The South Kingstown Recreation Center sits on St. Dominic Road, across the street from the Broad Rock Athletic Fields and minutes from downtown Wakefield-Peacedale. It’s an easily accessible facility with plenty of free parking you can use.

The rec center is also adjacent to the South County YMCA, which is another option if you’re looking to get some exercise. The Y has high-end fitness facilities, a group exercise studio, and a heated indoor pool, making it worth considering.

No matter where you choose to exercise, it’s nice knowing South Kingstown has options available while you enjoy this breathtaking part of the world.
