Traveling as part of a group is full of challenges. You’ll probably want to do things together while on vacation, but finding businesses with the space to accommodate you can be frustrating, especially if you have a large contingent.
One option you might have overlooked is a boat charter, as South County has a few options for sizable groups. These vessels allow you to spend time together while experiencing Block Island Sound, Long Island Sound, and other beautiful bodies that line this region.
You’ll have a few boats available to you, so you can select one based on your needs. Here are four boat charters worth considering as you plan your next South County vacation.
1) Block Island Ferry
Did you know renting an entire ferry during the offseason is possible? Block Island Ferry makes some of its boats available for charters in the spring and fall, ensuring you’ll have space for your entire group.

These boats hold between 250 and 1285, depending on what the company has available for you when you inquire, and all of them have indoor and outdoor areas you can utilize. You’ll have to contact Block Island Ferry directly to ask about availability, and keep in mind that charters are only possible between the middle of September and late May.
2) Frances Fleet
For a more traditional charter option with space for larger groups, consider Frances Fleet. This company operates out of Galilee and has multiple vessels with room for up to 150 people. You can also book two boats to accommodate as many as 300 guests.
The firm operates fishing charters from its smaller boats, but you can also arrange for sunset sails, birdwatching excursions, burials at sea, and other events on its larger ships. You’ll have to book the boat for at least three hours, and bringing your own food and beverages on the vessel is possible.
3) Ocean Zen
If you love sailing, Ocean Zen is worth a look. This 46-foot-long catamaran features a full kitchen, a washroom, indoor and outdoor areas, and a shaded area, ensuring you’re as comfortable as possible on your trip. The vessel can only accommodate six people, though, so it isn’t ideal for large groups.
All charters depart from Watch Hill and feature two US Coast Guard Certified Captains, so you’ll be completely safe as you explore Long Island Sound or anywhere else you want to see in the waters off the coast of Rhode Island.
4) Trim Again
Another option for those looking to sail is the Trim Again. This boat can also accommodate six people and leaves from Watch Hill, giving you a couple of options for getting on the ocean when booking a vacation rental in the village.
The Trim Again is a wood sailboat offering a classic experience you won’t find in many locations. Every excursion is completely private, and the captain can take you past lighthouses and historical villages that line the Rhode Island and Connecticut coasts. However, where you go and what you’ll see are completely up to you because every trip is customizable.
Space For the Entire Crew
These charter options in South County give you space for everyone in your group, as you can book a small sailboat for you and your spouse or an entire ferry if you’re arriving with a massive party. The choice is up to you, but you’ll undoubtedly have options as you explore coastal Rhode Island.
Traveling with a group can be challenging, but using these services makes it possible to do something together and get to know this beautiful part of the country in style while you do it.
